Honest Magic Spoon Cereal Review - thechowdown (2024)

I tried every flavor of Magic Spoon Cereal. Here are my honest (and unsponsored) thoughts and full review!

Honest Magic Spoon Cereal Review - thechowdown (1)

Magic Spoon is a cereal company that was started in Spring 2019. It is advertised as high protein, Keto-friendly cereal. There were many times this past year where I had the cereal in my cart, but could never pull the trigger because a 7 ounce box runs nearly $10.

Lately, I have been seeing a ton of sponsored ads on Instagram and other social media platforms boosting how delicious and affordable the cereal is. I noticed that I had not seen any unsponsored reviews of the cereal, so I finally bit the bullet and purchased the cereal so I could provide a fully honest, unbiased and unsponsored review of Magic Spoon Cereal.

Product Details

  • High protein: 12-14 grams per 1 cup serving
  • Keto-friendly: 4 grams of Net carbs per 1 cup serving
  • Zero sugar: Magic Spoon is sweetened with Allulose, which is a natural sweetener found in raisins, figs and maple syrup. Magic Spoon claims it tastes just like regular sugar, but has almost zero glycemic impact and almost zero calories (from their website).
  • Gluten free, wheat free and grain free
  • Soy free

How to Purchase Magic Spoon Cereal

Magic Spoon Cereal can only be purchased on the Magic Spoon website. You can only purchase a bundle of 4 boxes of cereal. You can get 4 boxes of the same flavor or mix and match flavors. The 4 box bundle is $39 before any taxes or shipping fees. Shipping is currently only available in the U.S.

I ordered my cereal on 2/16/21 and it arrived on 2/23/21, exactly one week later. I used a free shipping code that I found online. Shopping was easy and the product arrived in good condition.

Magic Spoon Cereal Review

Magic Spoon Cereal is currently available in five flavors: Frosted, Cinnamon, Peanut Butter, Fruity and Cocoa. I tried all five and here are my reviews in the order that I tried them.

Cocoa

Honest Magic Spoon Cereal Review - thechowdown (4)

Rating: 3/10

This was the first flavor I tried and it was without a doubt my least favorite flavor. The initial flavor was bitter and then became artificially sweet, which was confusing. The chocolate flavor was simply not good. However, the texture was great, just right amount of crunch. The cereal remained crunchy in the milk for a decent amount of time.

Fruity

Honest Magic Spoon Cereal Review - thechowdown (5)

Rating: 8.5/10

I knew before I took a bite of the fruity that I knew I was going to like it. It smelled just like Froot Loops. When I did take a bite, this was by far my favorite flavor of the bunch. It most closely resembles ‘regular’ cereal. It has a great fruity taste and great texture as well. It is more on the citrusy side (lemon and lime flavors) versus other fruit flavors, so just keep that in mind.

Cinnamon

Honest Magic Spoon Cereal Review - thechowdown (6)

Rating: 6/10

The cinnamon had both a natural and artificial cinnamon scent and taste. This was a bit disappointing as I feel cinnamon is delicious on it’s own and does not need to be ‘enhanced’ with artificial cinnamon flavor. The artificial flavor and sweetness overpowered the natural cinnamon flavor and unfortunately brought the rating for this flavor down.

By this point, I also noticed that the cereal was sticking in my teeth. I know this happens occasionally with ‘regular’ cereals, but seemed to be a bit more prominent with Magic Spoon. It didn’t necessarily bother me, but this is something to keep in mind if you try to avoid sticky foods or do not like that.

Peanut Butter

Honest Magic Spoon Cereal Review - thechowdown (7)

Rating: 5.5/10

I had similar feelings about the peanut butter flavor as I did the cinnamon flavor. The natural peanut butter flavor that was present was overpowered by an artificial taste and sweetness. I understand that the sweeteners used in Magic Spoon may be considered ‘natural’; however, they still gave the cereal an artificial taste.

Frosted

Honest Magic Spoon Cereal Review - thechowdown (8)

Rating: 7/10

This one really surprised me. I was expecting something like Frosted Flakes or Frosted Cheerios. However, this cereal tasted like straight up vanilla cake frosting. It was the sweetest cereal of the bunch. I am sure there are many people that would love this flavor for that reason, especially kids. However, I found it to be a bit too sweet for a breakfast cereal and see myself enjoying this flavor as a dessert. While I thought it was a tad too sweet, I did actually enjoy the flavor and would consider this my second favorite flavor of the bunch.

Overall Review

Overall Rating: 6/10

Overall I found Magic Spoon cereal to be too sweet, with an artificial taste that overpowered any natural flavors coming from the cinnamon, peanut butter or chocolate. The texture was consistently great, each flavor was perfectly crunchy; however, the cereal did get stuck in my teeth. The cereal stayed crunchy in the milk longer than some traditional cereals.

Would I purchase Magic Spoon Again?

No

For the price I would not purchase this product again. If the taste blew me out of the water, then maybe I would consider spending the money again. Otherwise, I would only purchase this cereal again if it were half the price, and I had the ability to purchase only one box at a time.

Would I recommend this product?

Yes and no.

There are a few factors that play into my answer. If you are an individual follows a standard diet, meaning no restrictions or requirements, then I would not recommend this product. In my opinion, it is not worth the price. I say enjoy a bowl of your favorite cereal and get your protein from other whole food or nutritionally dense sources.

If you are on a Keto diet and you love and miss cereal, then I would recommend trying this product to see if you like it. There are many Keto products on the market nowadays that are just plain awful. As far as Keto products go, this is much better than some other ones I have tried.

Additionally, if you are gluten free, grain free or soy free and you love cereal, then I would say this product may be worth trying out. However, there are a lot of ‘regular’ cereal options on the market that are naturally gluten free and way more affordable, such as Honey Nut Cheerios, Lucky Charms and Cocoa Pebbles.

Final Things to Consider

Magic Spoon Cereal advertises on their website that they have 17,000+ 5 star reviews. When you go to the ‘Reviews’ page, you are only able to see 9 pages of reviews, each with 10 reviews (90 total). Every review is 5 stars. There are no 4 star, 3 star, etc. reviews on the site. This tells me they either filter the reviews or they are paid reviews. When I tried to add my review to the site, I could not figure out how to add it.

Magic Spoon does claim to offer a full refund if you are not completely satisfied with your purchase. I will not do this as I like the cereals enough to eat them all and do not believe in food waste. I have seen a couple reviews on Reddit where people contacted customer service to receive a refund and they did. However, I cannot verify if this is true or not.
