Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the option to question specific calls made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
